It has become a bit difficult to avoid GMOs when shopping at the supermarket. Thankfully people are becoming more aware and there is still GMO free foods out there. Checking for the correct labels and reading the ingredient list
GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture prohibits the use of GMOs in organic products. Shop for foods that are homegrown and from local farmers. Buy only organic or non-GMO verified meat, dairy, eggs, and fish.
Only Buy Foods with Verified Labels
Search for foods with verified lables such and USDA Organic or The Non-GMO Project. The Non-GMO Project is a non profit organization that provides verification and labeling for Non-GMO food and products. Remember to read nutritional labels and ingredient lists.
Stay away from additives and processed foods
In the U.S. GMOs are in 80 % of processed foods today.
