Many raw foods are packed with vitamins and minerals that are essential for optimal health. When raw fruits and vegetables are cooked they may loose a lot if not all of their nutrients, providing you with little benefit. Below is a list of 5 foods you should eat raw.

Nuts

Raw nuts may reduce the risk of blood clots and improve the healthy lining of the arteries. People who eat nuts are less likely to gain weight and have a smaller waist circumference and lower systolic blood pressure. Raw nuts are packed with powerful nutrients like healthy fats, fiber, plant sterols, vitamins, and minerals. Recent studies have suggested that nuts help reduce the risk of many serious chronic diseases. When nuts are cooked their nutritional value goes down and the disease fighting fats get broke down.

Onions

Onions contain high levels of antioxidants and cancer-fighting properties. When onions are cooked at a high temperatures their fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin A and E are destroyed along with many of the other nutrients onions provide. Raw onions help maintain bone health, improve digestion, and protect against allergies. Onions also help prevent cold and flu like symptoms, prevent certain types of cancer and disease. They are also great for healthy skin and hair.

Bell Peppers

Just one raw bell pepper is only 32 calories and is packed with vitamin C. When cooked the vitamin C content is broken down. Green peppers offer high amounts of luteolin which is an antioxidant that helps fight off age related illnesses. A recent study shows that when a bell pepper is grilled for about 8 minutes it looses 40 % of it’s luteolin. Raw bell peppers also boost the immune system, help control diabetes, lower the risk of cancer, and reduce bad cholesterol.

Garlic

Raw garlic offers a number of healthy benefits but cooking garlic may reduce many of its benefits. Cooking garlic decreases it’s anticancer properties and it’s nutrients all together. Raw garlic is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal. Garlic reduces the risk of colon cancer, boosts the immune system, reduces cholesterol, improves circulation, breaks down blood clots and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Chocolate

Raw Cacao (Chocolate) is packed with nutrients including essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium, sulfur, zinc, iron, copper, potassium, manganese, protein, fiber and Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B9, C and E. It also contains chromium, phosphorus, Omega-6 fatty acids, saturated fat, amino acids, soluble fiber and enzymes. However, when cacao is cooked it depletes it’s nutritional value. Cooked cacao or chocolate is usually what you will find in most store bought baked goods.
