Fight Obesity with Granny Smith Apples

fight obesity with granny smith applesThe old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” just might be proving itself to be true. A recent study published in the journal Food Chemistry, a group of researchers led by Washington State University suggest granny smith apples help build healthy gut bacteria in the colon especially in people who struggle with obesity.

Why You Need a Healthy Gut

A healthy gut is essential for optimal health. Apples tend to always be an excellent snack when aiming for a healthy a gut. They have high levels of non-digestiblecompounds such as dietary fiber and polyphenols. They also have low levels of carbohydrates, which is also great for gut health.

While apples are being digested, the non-digestible compounds stay untouched until they reach the colon. Once they have reached the colon, the existing bacteria in the colon begins to ferment. This process helps build up friendly bacteria in the gut.

Granny Smith Apples Rank Above All Apples

A recent study published took a look at all the different apples including Granny Smith, Braeburn, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, and Red Delicious. The study tested which of the apples was more superior to the others. Granny smith apples just happened to be at the top of the list.

It is explained in the study that the non-digestible compounds found in Granny Smith apples changed the type and amount of fecal bacteria that was found in obese mice. The team also discovered that the bacterial communities in the colon of obese mice differ from the skinnier mice.

Make Healthy Eating Choices

Obesity is rising at a dangerous rate. About two-thirds of Americans are obese. Dangerous side effects of obesity range from heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Thankfully, many of these health conditions can be preventable.

Simply start making healthier and conscious choices when eating and remember to stock up on granny smith apples! The leader of this study Giuliana Noratto stated “What determines the balance of bacteria in our colon is the food we consume. Re-establishing a healthy balance of bacteria in the colon stabilizes metabolic processes that influence inflammation and the sensation of feeling satisfied, or satiety.”
